What is the Sertoma Youth Ranch?

The Sertoma Youth Ranch is an 80 acre wooded campground which was organized in 1974. It is a non-profit organization that provides youth groups from all over the state of Florida the opportunity to enjoy the rustic outdoors, free of charge. It is run by a Board of Directors elected from Sertoma and Ranch members.

Changes coming to Sertoma

Sertoma Youth Ranch to become a property of The Will McLean Foundation It is often said that when one door closes another one opens. Not later than October 31, 2022, Sertoma Youth Ranch, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, will complete a transfer of all of its assets, including the 80-acre campground and event facility, to The Will McLean Foundation, Inc., also a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Operations at the Youth Ranch property will continue uninterrupted.

The campground itself will not close and it is expected that the same events hosted there in the past, particularly music festivals and youth programs, will continue in the future under the Will McLean Foundation. The Ranch property is a favorite outdoor entertainment and activities venue, and the Will McLean Foundation looks forward to carrying on that legacy.

For more than 45 years Sertoma Youth Ranch, has developed, expanded and cared for its campground and event park in Hernando County between Brooksville and Dade City. Dedicated to serving Florida’s youth, this all-volunteer association established the property as a premier outdoor music venue, hosting more than a dozen well attended festivals annually. This allowed them to make the facilities available, without charge, to various youth groups and special needs youth activities. Their dedication and service will long be remembered.

However, after a long and successful run, organizational difficulties have made it impossible for Sertoma Youth Ranch, Inc. to continue its charitable mission. Its Board of Directors has voted to dissolve the entity, not later than October 31, 2022, and chose to transfer all its assets to another 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, The Will McLean Foundation. The Foundation plans to hold the property and other assets through a wholly owned subsidiary entity.

Formed in 1990, the Will McLean Foundation, like Sertoma, is an all-volunteer organization. Its mission to “save Florida through music” tracks the legacy of its namesake, Will McLean, Florida’s Troubadour, who wrote thousands of songs about his native land and was committed to the protection of its history, heritage and natural resources. The Foundation created in his honor keeps his memory alive through their annual Will McLean Music Festival that features the finest of Florida’s own songwriters, musicians and artists. In addition, the Will McLean Foundation hosts concert events, like its monthly Sunday Sampler series in Dunnellon, awards educational scholarships to Florida’s youth, works to organize and promote youth education programs and provides sponsorships to other nonprofit events and organizations that further these charitable objectives.

Sertoma Youth Ranch, Inc. is sad to be bringing its charitable work to a conclusion but is excited that the Will McLean Foundation has stepped up to ensure that the Ranch property continues to be used for the benefit of the citizens of the State of Florida in accordance with their own arts and education-oriented mission. The Will McLean Foundation is honored to have been chosen to assume ownership and operation of the Ranch property and the confidence that implies. They are grateful to Sertoma Youth Ranch, Inc. for its many years of exceptional service and selfless dedication to Florida’s youth. Stay tuned, much more information to follow. Inquiries regarding future operations at the Ranch facilities can be directed to Doug Spears at: president@willmclean.com. .
